Passed Resolution Against Nuclear Proliferation

This resolution was passed by members at our October 2017 Membership Meeting.  It will be forwarded to our State and Federal representatives.

RESOLUTION AGAINST THE NEW NUCLEAR ARMS RACE

WHEREAS our government is embarking on a trillion dollar, 30-year program to upgrade and expand our nuclear armaments; and

WHEREAS we have nearly 1,000 nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alert; and

WHEREAS today’s nuclear weapons are hundreds of times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; and

WHEREAS the President has the sole authority to launch these weapons without consulting anyone else; and

WHEREAS eight other countries also have nuclear weapons and if we expand our nuclear arsenal it will provoke a new arms race because other nuclear weapons states will feel they need to keep up; and

WHEREAS our government has signed the Non-proliferation Treaty which requires our country and other nuclear weapons states to negotiate for nuclear disarmament; and

WHEREAS the United Nations, over the opposition of the United States, passed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; and

WHEREAS that Treaty is now ready for signature;

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the 37th District Democrats calls on our government to cease any and all efforts to upgrade and expand our nuclear armament; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOVED that the 37 District Democrats calls on our government to require additional checks and balances before nuclear weapons can be launched; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the 37th District Democrats calls on our government to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be distributed to all our state, local and federal representatives with the request that they call on the federal executive to implement the above resolutions.
